Designing Digital Health Pilots That Can Scale

Too many pilots end at the pilot stage. Planning evidence, infrastructure, and ownership from the start gives promising tools a path forward.

Digital health pilots are often designed to prove that a tool can work. Fewer are designed to show that it can work at scale, inside real health systems, with local ownership.

Plan for the decision after the pilot

Ask early what evidence a health ministry, funder, or health system will need to adopt the tool. Design the pilot to generate that evidence.

  • Define success measures that matter to adopters
  • Choose sites that reflect where the tool will eventually be used
  • Budget for integration, training, and support, not just the software
  • Agree on ownership and sustainability before launch
